Communities across parts of Corangamite Shire are celebrating the return of the TAC L2P Program.

Central Grampians Local Learning and Employment Network (CGLLEN) has expanded service delivery of the program which supports young learner drivers who do not have access to a vehicle or supervising driver, gain the 120 hours of experience needed to apply for a probationary licence.

CGLLEN already delivers L2P across Ararat Rural City, Northern Grampians Shire and Pyrenees Shire and has helped more than 180 young learner drivers gain their licences over the past decade. It will now expand its reach to Terang, Noorat, Cobden and Camperdown.

CGLLEN Executive Officer, Jane Moriarty, said the organisation was looking forward to working with local communities to reintroduce L2P in parts of the Corangamite area.

“There was an opportunity for us to expand our reach beyond Lake Bolac to ensure young people in the area have access to this valuable road safety program,” Ms Moriarty said.

“We know how difficult it can be for some learner drivers to access a vehicle or find a fully licensed driver that can supervise them while they gain experience on the road. Without the TAC L2P Program, these young people face missing out on the independence and opportunities that a probationary licence provides.”

To support L2P’s return to the Corangamite Shire, CGLLEN is looking for community members to volunteer their time as L2P mentors in Terang, Noorat, Cobden and Camperdown.  Applicants must hold a full Victorian drivers licence and successfully complete screening and suitability checks.

Ms Moriarty said eligible mentors would be provided free training before being matched with a learner and program vehicle to ensure they are well prepared for their role as a supervising driver.

“Mentoring is so rewarding and you only need to be able to commit to one drive per week to have a positive impact on a young person.” Ms Moriarty said.
